Area Design Manager

Description:

Builders First Source, America’s largest supplier of building materials, value-added components, and building services to the professional market, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Area Design Manager (Design – Indirect). This role is responsible for leading, managing, and coordinating multiple design departments across an assigned area, ensuring that all design processes, work quality, and output meet or exceed company standards.

The Area Design Manager will travel within the area to interface with design departments, manage Design Managers, and lead the overall design function. Key responsibilities include conducting performance reviews, distributing and balancing workloads across departments, ensuring compliance with company standards for truss design, and maintaining effective communication with the Director of Truss Design and Regional Manufacturing Director. The role also involves reviewing and implementing truss software updates, ensuring software settings compliance, monitoring pricing and management systems, and providing necessary training.

This position requires active involvement in employee recruitment, interviewing, hiring, training, and employee relations. Strong supervisory capabilities are essential, including staff planning, performance management, and conflict resolution.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

• 6–8 years of directly related experience

• Proven managerial experience

• Proficiency in Mitek Truss Software

• Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

Competencies:

• Ability to interpret technical documents, procedures, and regulations

• Proficiency in geometry, trigonometry, ratios, and proportions

• Strong data analysis and problem-solving abilities

• Skilled in presenting to managers, clients, and diverse groups

Work Environment / Physical Activity:

• Primarily sedentary work with occasional standing and walking

• Routine lifting up to 50 pounds

• Requires close vision
