Assistant Project Architectural Historian

What you will accomplish:

  • Plan and complete historic resource surveys of residential, commercial, agricultural, industrial, and institutional properties using tablet computers, digital photography, and other survey methodology.
  • Conduct archival research, focusing on primary and secondary sources, and write historic narratives and context statements.
  • Lead projects/tasks from start to finish, with guidance (PM for medium projects or Task Lead for large projects).
  • Write technical reports, including but not limited to technical memorandums, critical issues analyses, survey reports, historic context statements, and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) nominations. Experience with HABS/HAER/HALS is a plus.
  • Evaluate resources under NRHP criteria.
  • You may serve as permitted field supervisor or Principal Investigator
  • You will assign and communicate technical needs and project tasks to project team members.
  • Prepare defensible compliance documentation in support of Section 106 review of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), as amended.
  • Assist with project management tasks (i.e., developing budgets and staff coordination).
  • Carry out project-level review for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior and National Park Service standards in support of NHPA and local permitting projects.
  • Maintain SWCA’s high standard of technical ethics and quality assurance and ensure that project deliverables meet agency and industry standards and be motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
  • Independently manage stand-alone architectural history and historic preservation projects and assist other project managers in the execution of architectural history, historic preservation, preservation planning, and components of multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Takes responsibility for team safety, developing safety plans (when applicable), and anticipating potential safety hazards.

Experience and qualifications for success:

Qualifications:

 

  • Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation, Public History, Heritage Conservation, Architectural History, or a closely related field.
  • Meet the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualifications for Architectural History (36 Code of Federal Regulations Part 61).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in cultural resources management as an architectural historian or similar.
  • A working knowledge of federal and state cultural resources and historic preservation laws and practices, including Section 106 of the NHPA.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the history/architectural history of the Southern United States, and you must have taken American Architectural History courses and be familiar with styles, forms, and materials.
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be able to meet SWCA’s driver requirements.
  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 35% of the time.
