SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University—Brooklyn’s only academic medical center and one of the nation’s top-ranked institutions in healthcare education—is seeking a highly skilled Assistant Supervisor, Blood Bank to join their Department of Clinical Laboratories. This full-time, on-site role offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for experienced professionals in transfusion medicine and laboratory management.
As an integral member of the Blood Bank team, the Assistant Supervisor will oversee daily laboratory operations, ensure regulatory compliance, coordinate quality assurance activities, and assist in managing staff workflows for operational efficiency. The role requires strong leadership in a clinical setting with a focus on delivering quality patient care and laboratory excellence.
Supervise daily blood bank operations in accordance with hospital, departmental, and government regulations.
Ensure timely and accurate testing of specimens and reporting of results.
Review quality control (QC) data and participate in performance improvement initiatives.
Maintain accurate records of test results, QC data, and inventory logs.
Reassign or shift staff duties as needed to maintain seamless laboratory workflow.
Coordinate various administrative functions related to laboratory operations.
Perform additional duties as assigned by laboratory leadership.
License: Valid New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
Education: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent credits) in Medical Technology, Physical Science, or Biological Science.
Experience: Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in a blood bank or transfusion services laboratory.
Certification: ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification is highly desirable.
Days/Hours: Variable days and variable hours, offering some flexibility based on department needs.
Salary Grade: SL-4
Salary Range: Commensurate with experience and qualifications (exact figures discussed after conditional offer due to Executive Order 161).
