The Division of Finance and Administration (DFA) provides services and support to over 50,000 students, faculty, and staff with the mission of advancing UCI’s brilliant future and the vision of becoming world-class campus partners. DFA serves the university as planning partners, problem solvers, and solution providers—striving to make it as easy as possible for people to get the services they need, when they need them. Accounting and Fiscal Services at UC Irvine is comprised of several units that support critical campus business operations: General Accounting, Contracts & Grants Accounting, Cost Accounting, Accounts Payable, Payroll & Accounting Systems, Financial Services, Financial Management Support & Reporting, Procurement, and Internal Controls. Working closely with campus financial management, the UCI Controller’s Office is a trusted strategic partner divided into three core teams: Accounting & Fiscal Services, Procurement Services, and Financial Services. The Accounting & Fiscal Services team ensures the integrity of UCI's financial reporting, enables effective and efficient campus financial processes and controls, manages contracts and grants funding at the post-award stage, and champions compliance with policies, laws, and regulations. The Procurement Services team leads through best practices in the acquisition of quality goods and services by implementing processes and procedures that deliver high quality expertise, significant value, and excellent customer service. Finally, the Financial Services team provides support and resources to campus in the areas of billing, collections, payments, disbursements, loan administration, and student tax information. In all these areas, the Controller’s Office is always dedicated to providing effective and efficient customer service in support of UCI’s mission and goals.

Required:

  • Ten or more years of progressively responsible experience with managing multiple teams and staff and evaluating internal controls at a level exercising considerable independent judgment and authority.
  • Expert knowledge of accounting principles and practices (e.g., GAAP, GASB, and Governmental Audit Standards, and of accounting and financial techniques and methods).
  • Experience in directing highly regulated financial closing activities in a university/public setting and manage complex financial projects on large teams.
  • B.S. or B. A. degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
  • California licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), CMA, or CIA.
  • Extensive knowledge of financial policies, practices, and systems; accounting principles and processes and financial reporting; fund accounting; human resource planning; budget planning. Strong ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Knowledge of team dynamics, ability to work in a team setting, and lead a group of people with disparate opinions and views to a consensus decision-making model. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across the organization at all levels; ability to interact with diverse populations. Client services oriented; good listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills Ability to multi-task. Ability to evaluate processes to establish and maintain appropriate accountability structures and strong internal control elements. Demonstrated negotiation skills Ability to assess a broad spectrum of organizational needs and job-related demands, establish priorities, delegate, and manage multiple projects simultaneously Demonstrated project management skills to successfully lead the planning, development, and deployment of a highly visible and complex enterprise financial system with a complicated matrix of stakeholders and customers, limited resources, and firm deadlines. Demonstrated experience deploying an enterprise financial system in a large higher education or similar organization Experience in effectively functioning with technology in a networked environment interacting with centralized legacy financial systems and tools. Skill in concentrated, determined, and sustained action toward attainment of established goals. Ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility, to disarm anger and constructively handle complaints Ability to maintain neutrality, confidentiality, and high ethical standards. Ability to function effectively in crisis situations, sustaining a reasoned and temperate approach. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
