LSU Press is seeking a talented Book Designer to join the Design and Production Department, who will be responsible for design and project management functions involved in the design, pre-press, printing, and digital production of book content. One of the oldest university presses in the South, LSU Press publishes approximately 70 new books each year, primarily in the fields of southern history, southern literary studies, Louisiana history and culture, environmental studies, southern food-ways, media studies, landscape architecture, fan studies, and poetry. Since 1935, the Press has published close to 3,500 books, nearly 2,000 of which are still in print, and has distributed over 7 million books—all bearing the LSU Press colophon—worldwide. The Press has garnered national and international accolades for its work, including four Pulitzer Prizes, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Bancroft Prize, the Tom Watson Brown Award in Civil War History, the Frederick Douglass Award in Slavery Studies, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. LSU Press is a proud member of the Association of University Presses. The Book Designer is responsible for the design and typesetting of covers and interiors for their assigned books published by LSU Press. This is an entry-level position and reports to the Production Manager.

Design and typeset an average of 12 covers and interiors per season (24 per year) in Adobe InDesign using paragraph and character style sheets. Prepare electronic files for text and covers, communicate manufacturing specifications to vendors, and supervise the manufacture of assigned titles. Work should align with the design standards set forth by the Design and Production Manager, marketing needs, schedules, and budgets. Search for appropriate cover art/illustrations for assigned covers. Work with Design and Production Manager to ensure permissions for and purchasing art. 65%

Other job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Helping to maintain schedules and book specifications in Bibliolive database.
  • Scanning and adjusting images in Photoshop.
  • Assistance with marketing and general press design and production tasks as needed. 35%
