Communication Specialist

 

Description:

We are seeking a Communications Specialist interested in accelerating health policy impact at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This position will support the communications efforts of three centers based largely in the Department of Health Policy and Management: The Roger C. Lipitz Center for Integrated Health Care, the Hopkins' Economics of Alzheimer's Disease and Services (HEADS) Center, and the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative (HBHI).

Faculty and staff at the Lipitz Center, HEADS Center and HBHI are involved in cutting-edge research in a variety of issue areas in healthcare, including but not limited to contextual factors in aging and dementia, health services research, health care policy, health equity and other issues making headlines today. The person who fills this position will help plan, design, implement and manage various communications and public affairs activities with the goal of elevating visibility and building positive awareness of each Center's research, practice and educational activities on a variety of mediums, such as digital, print, reports, videos and social media.

The Communications Specialist will work closely with Center leadership, program managers, and faculty to help disseminate important findings from research studies and activities within each Center. This will involve proactively working with faculty, trainees and staff on developing, writing and designing content. The Communications Specialist will also develop and lead a comprehensive communications strategy for each Center in close collaboration with communications and media teams at the Bloomberg School, the Department of Health Policy and Management, and the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Content Development & Design

Design communications materials, including graphics, promotional assets, presentations, and other items.
Develop and implement the content strategy for each Center.
Curate content for Center channels by regularly monitoring media, the Bloomberg School's communications outlets, and other relevant content sources for news and updates pertinent to the Centers and their audiences.
Ensure all communications projects and efforts comply with brand standards of Johns Hopkins University, the Bloomberg School of Public Health and JHU Use of Name Guidelines.
Ensure all communications projects and efforts comply with brand standards of Johns Hopkins University and the Bloomberg School.
Develop and maintain editorial and content calendars.

Social Media

Develop and publish content from the Centers, partners, and other relevant sources to social media (Twitter, YouTube).
Develop and implement social media campaigns and strategies.
Compile metrics from social media channels.

Website

Maintain the Lipitz Center and HEADS Center websites by adding or editing content as needed.
Monitor website on a regular basis to ensure information is up-to-date and accurate.

Newsletter

Contribute to and disseminate newsletters, issue briefs and other email campaigns, including drafting and editing content in collaboration with Center program managers and faculty.
Compile metrics from email campaigns.

Excellent technical communications skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate to a range of audiences.
Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to understand and synthesize and distill large amounts of information, and generate key messages.
Ability to appropriately communicate with external partners.
Experience with social media and website content generation and management.
Experience leading/managing projects and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to work well under pressure with demanding and/or shifting deadlines.
Excellent work attitude and habits including strong interpersonal skills, reliability, flexibility, self-motivated and the ability to think and work independently and as a team.
Proactively liaise and correspond with project team, contractors and other related personnel & partners.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience using web content management systems (i.e. Drupal)
Experience with email campaign applications.
Experience with social media management.
Experience with design software/programs (i.e. Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field.
Two years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
