Construction Assistant

 

Description:

We are seeking a Construction Assistant to provide support to the Construction Manager for single-family housing construction projects. This role will involve on-site guidance to volunteers, supply purchasing, managing deliveries, and performing construction duties as qualified. The ideal candidate will be a proactive team player, able to quickly build rapport with groups of volunteers of varying skill levels.

Key Responsibilities:

Planning & Construction of Habitat Homes

  • Ensure that all necessary construction tools are available and well-maintained.

  • Assist in obtaining certificates of insurance and financial records from contractors.

  • Help homebuyers select materials as needed.

  • Attend meetings with Family Services, Homebuyer, and Lender when required.

  • Schedule and be present for inspections.

  • Ensure all punch list items are completed on time and correctly.

  • Train homebuyers on routine home maintenance.

Management of Materials & Tools

  • Inventory and check the quality of materials delivered to the site, returning rejects as needed.

  • Clean up tools and materials at the end of each day.

Supervision of Volunteers and Sub-Contractors

  • Coordinate the work of volunteers and sub-contractors.

  • Teach volunteers how to complete construction tasks.

  • Engage future homebuyers in the construction process and work with regular volunteers.

  • Ensure work is of high quality and completed on time.

  • Communicate regularly with the Director of Community Engagement for positive volunteer experiences.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend staff meetings on behalf of the construction team.

  • Act as a liaison between construction, homeowner services, community engagement, and administrative staff.

  • Complete training and maintain relevant certifications, including safety and site-specific certifications.

  • Obtain necessary permits for home construction.

  • Oversee all phases of construction, from planning to reporting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to follow directions and understand tasks.

  • Must be physically fit, with the strength and stamina to perform tasks in various environments, including working at heights.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push/pull 50-pound loads.

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.

  • Must be able to stand and walk for up to eight hours a day and climb stairs/ladders with heavy materials.

Hours:

This is a part-time, hourly position (maximum of 24 hours per week). The schedule is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with variations provided in advance.
