Role Overview:

The Construction Technician - Line Worker plays a critical role in installing, maintaining, and repairing telecommunication infrastructure. This position involves working with fiber optic, copper cables, poles, and conduits both aerially and underground. The worker will operate heavy machinery, ensure safety compliance, handle material inventory, and participate in technical tasks like splicing cables.

This is a physically demanding, safety-sensitive role that includes working outdoors in all weather conditions, frequent travel (potentially over 50% of the year), and requires availability for on-call schedules, overtime, weekends, and holidays.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, repair, and maintain poles, cables, and conduits in both aerial and underground settings.

  • Run fiber optic and copper cables; set up and connect customer services, testing and adjusting equipment as necessary.

  • Measure signal strength on utility poles using electronic test equipment; inspect and troubleshoot faults or malfunctions.

  • Access difficult areas via bucket trucks, climbing poles, ladders, trenches, tunnels, or crawl spaces.

  • String cables between poles, towers, and trenches; pull cables using jacks, hoists, and hand methods.

  • Lay underground cables in trenches or pull through conduits and manholes.

  • Operate various heavy construction equipment such as digger derricks, bucket trucks, backhoes, trenchers, and cable plows.

  • Read and interpret staking sheets, blueprints, and telecom facility records; follow engineering instructions and safety procedures.

  • Prepare detailed engineering field notes and recommend construction methodology changes when necessary.

  • Participate in engineering, permit, and construction planning as needed.

  • Perform routine maintenance, including site cleanup, sign placement, and weed control.

  • Splice copper and fiber optic cables; perform all tasks associated with cable splicing.

  • Follow all safety protocols, attend safety meetings, and ensure the safety of self and crew members.


Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in telecommunications construction or related field.

  • Valid pole climbing certification.

  • OSHA 10 Hour Safety Course and Buck Squeeze (pole climbing certification) required.

  • Proficient in operating heavy construction equipment and tools.

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 pounds regularly.

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and in confined spaces or at heights.

  • Flexibility to work on-call rotations including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

  • Valid driver’s license with ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

  • Must pass Department of Transportation (DOT) certification.

  • Must be able to travel as required by business needs.


Physical Demands:

  • Continuous standing, walking, climbing, bending, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, and lifting heavy loads (up to and beyond 30 pounds).

  • Continuous use of hand tools and foot controls, with medium to high dexterity and fine manipulation skills.

  • Visual and auditory acuity required for safety and precision in the field.

  • Exposure to cold, heat, dampness, heights, vibration, dust, fumes, and other environmental factors common to outdoor construction work.
