Database/ Web Developer

 

Description:

New England Biolabs (NEB) is seeking a skilled and motivated web developer with database management and software engineering expertise to join our Research Computational team.

The ideal candidate will have experience in database management, website construction, and report generation. In addition, the successful candidate should possess a solid understanding of software engineering principles and be able to develop and implement software solutions to support our research and development activities.

Primary Responsibilities and Projects:
 

  • Update and maintain the Restriction Enzyme Database REBASE, manage the overall use of the required data in the database, and provide technical support for internal and external users
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database performance issues, identifying bottlenecks and proposing solutions for optimization
  • Maintain and improve the general functionality of our in-house enzyme discovery computational platform
  • Design and develop software solutions to support the company’s bioinformatics research activities
  • Collaborate with scientists to understand their requirements and translate them into effective database and software solutions

     

Required Qualifications and Experience:
 

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related fields.
  • Experience in database management and proficiency in database design concepts, data modeling, and schema optimization for relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Understanding of data security practices and compliance requirements, especially in a regulated industry like biotech.
  • Experience in developing user-friendly interfaces for databases and bioinformatics applications, ensuring accessibility and usability for both technical and non-technical users.
  • Experience in programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics such as Python, R, or Java, and experience in developing robust and scalable software applications are highly desired.
