Description:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Deputy Manager – Electronic Fabrication (Assistant Group Supervisor) to join its cutting-edge technical team. This role offers the opportunity to lead groundbreaking projects in advanced electronics design, fabrication, and manufacturing while helping to shape the strategic vision of the group.

The successful candidate will partner with the Group Supervisor to guide team execution, ensure technical excellence, and inspire innovation across multidisciplinary projects that directly support national defense and security.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Projects & Innovation: Act as a principal investigator, project lead, or senior contributor on electrical fabrication and advanced electronics programs.

  • Ensure Excellence in Delivery: Oversee task assignments, manage workloads, and maintain compliance with best practices for quality and process management while meeting sponsor requirements.

  • Strategic Planning & Resources: Support forecasting, budgeting, and resource management to ensure cost-effective program execution.

  • Shape Future Capabilities: Contribute to the development of new technologies aligned with APL’s mission and Department priorities.

  • Develop & Mentor Talent: Recruit, coach, and retain technical staff while fostering a culture of innovation, career growth, and leadership development.

  • Foster Collaboration & Culture: Build strong cross-disciplinary relationships with sponsors, partners, and colleagues to drive a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.

Technical Areas of Focus:

  • Micro- and nano-fabrication

  • Printed circuit board design and development

  • 3D-printed electronics

  • Advanced electronic technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or Physics

  • 12+ years of relevant professional experience in advanced electronics development

  • Demonstrated experience in developing innovations, proposals, and hands-on electronics prototyping

  • Active Top Secret security clearance
