Design Manager

 

Description:

Swinerton, a nationally recognized leader in construction and design-build services, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Design Manager to join its Los Angeles team. The ideal candidate will oversee all aspects of design management on design-build projects from inception through construction completion, ensuring efficient coordination between design teams, clients, and internal stakeholders.

This role requires a professional with deep expertise in architectural, engineering, and construction management processes, capable of driving innovation, constructability, and efficiency throughout the design phase while maintaining alignment with project budgets and timelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead design management efforts on complex Design-Build projects from award through construction completion.

  • Analyze RFPs and develop a design-build capture strategy in collaboration with Business Development teams.

  • Negotiate and monitor architectural and engineering service agreements, ensuring scope alignment and deliverable compliance.

  • Conduct monthly cost and billing analyses relative to Owner, Architect, and internal budgets to ensure financial accuracy and project efficiency.

  • Oversee and facilitate design coordination meetings to integrate best construction practices and reduce design ambiguities.

  • Provide continuous design support during project execution, resolving issues and maintaining constructability and compliance standards.

  • Manage multi-discipline design efforts, ensuring quality control and alignment with project goals.

  • Serve as the primary client liaison, maintaining positive relationships with owners, architects, engineers, and design-build partners.

  • Participate in design development, value engineering, and constructability reviews to optimize project performance.

  • Develop preliminary design and construction schedules to align with project milestones.

  • Support and guide cross-functional teams in achieving excellence in Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) implementation.

  • Ensure sustainability initiatives by incorporating green building practices and LEED design principles.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to ensure project success and alignment with Swinerton’s core values.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture (or equivalent practical experience).

  • 5–8 years of experience in construction management, with proven supervisory and leadership skills.

  • Strong understanding of design-build project delivery and solicitation processes.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to issue resolution.

  • Strong organizational, negotiation, and communication capabilities.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of contract law, project accounting, and project management control systems (including scheduling, cost control, procurement, and estimating).

  • LEED Accredited Professional with demonstrated experience in sustainable design and construction practices.

  • Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and related design software.

  • Experience utilizing VDC and BIM technologies to enhance design efficiency and collaboration.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and deliver complex projects on time and within budget.
