Digital Communications Specialist

 

Description:

The Center for Jewish History seeks an Institutional and Reference Archivist to manage and steward the Center’s unique institutional archive—spanning over 30 years of physical and digital organizational history—and to provide reference services to internal stakeholders. This role helps ensure proper preservation, arrangement, and access to materials that support leadership decision-making, research, development, and operational activities. The position also contributes to reference services within the Reading Room.


Key Responsibilities:

Institutional Archive Management & Stewardship (70%)

  • Manage, preserve, and arrange physical and digital institutional archival materials

  • Verify and maintain component-level descriptions following archival standards

  • Provide reference services to senior leadership and internal teams

  • Oversee digital preservation workflows

  • Identify items of strategic or donor value

  • Support grant writing, reporting, and budgeting efforts

  • Determine restrictions and evaluate materials for potential external access

Reference & Research Services (30%)

  • Assist users with archival databases, catalogs, and research tools

  • Maintain familiarity with all partner collections

  • Collaborate with collection, research, and technical staff


Qualifications:

  • Master’s in Library & Information Science (ALA-accredited) or archival studies

  • At least 2 years of archival experience

  • Proficiency in processing physical and digital materials

  • Strong knowledge of archival standards such as DACS, EAD, EAC-CPF

  • Experience with ArchivesSpace

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and project-management skills

  • Ability to lift 40+ lbs


Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with institutional or corporate archives

  • Familiarity with audiovisual or born-digital materials

  • DAS certification (Society of American Archivists)

  • Interest in Jewish history and culture

  • Strong service orientation and discretion

  • Ability to collaborate across diverse departments


Additional Requirements:

  • On-site attendance required (5 days/week)

  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills

  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential material

  • Physical ability to lift archival boxes
