Description:

The Eskenazi Museum seeks to hire a Director of Administration and Strategic Initiatives who will provide oversight of the museum's operations, including budget planning, security operations, and human resources. The Director Administration serves as a member of the museum's senior leadership team, and will lead the museum's efforts to be a financially sustainable and inclusive part of Indiana University. The successful candidate will be coming to the Eskenazi Museum at an exciting juncture, joining a senior leadership team that is in the process of implementing a 5-year DEAI strategic plan and exploring ways to broaden our audience impact through new strategic initiatives.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Directs the annual budgeting process and the development of financial plans, including annual/multi-year fiscal forecasts to meet strategic goals
  • Develops, recommends, and maintains, as approved by the museum director, short- and long-range financial plans, taking into account multiple and complex funding sources
  • Through a dotted line reporting relationship with the museum's business manager, oversees the museum's finance department in the production of financial projections and the development of business plans and goals
  • Supervises the security and guest services team
  • Ensures procurement of equipment and services
  • Serves as liaison between the museum and residential programs and services at the university, which facilitates operations at the gift shop/café
  • Serves as the museum's human resource representative, liaising with the university's Human Resources department to facilitate recruitment, hiring, separations, compensation, benefits, and conflict resolution

General Responsibilities

  • Provides the highest level of operational leadership and coordination of assigned staff members to define museum services methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority museum services projects/initiatives.
  • Establishes short-term business plans and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-project/multi-phase museum initiatives.
  • Conducts a variety of personnel actions to include, but not limited to hiring, promotion, performance management, and dismissal.
  • Manages high-level assignments and allocation of museum resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; may coordinate large-scale museum projects with a wide audience in support of academic initiatives.
  • Makes budgetary recommendations/proposals based on resource needs and ensures cost containment.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry museum services standards, procedures, trends, and protocols; responsible for the implementation of new protocols/procedures to address business needs.
  • Works collaboratively with other museum leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task-forces related to museum services.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in museum services or related field

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Arts Administration, or similar field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 4 years in museum services or related field
  • 1 year of management experience in museum services or related field
