Description:

The Director of Business Operations will be responsible for managing and improving all internal business operations and ensuring that the department is on track to meet its financial goals. This individual should be a competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments, projects, and tasks of moderate scope and complexity; works independently with general supervision; and exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. The selected candidate should be highly skilled in conducting pre-award and post-award activities, and very knowledgeable in financial and business accounting principles to assist in supporting faculty recipients of external awards that range from federal, state, city, and private entities. This individual may provide guidance and assistance to entry-level professionals and/or support other employees.

Essential Functions:

  • Supports The Institute Director in all areas of strategic management of business operations to support the Center's strategic goals, employing knowledge of all aspects of the programs and operations.

  • Manages The Institute budget and prepares bi-annual forecasts.

  • Formulates policy and practices to improve strategic management of business operations.

  • Acts as research administrator for all Institute research projects.

  • Interprets information in requests for applications/proposals and communicates critical information to principal investigators.

  • Reviews and guides others in the review of financial and administrative management requirements of research contracts and grant proposals, awards, and transactions to ensure compliance with institutional and sponsor policies.

  • Monitors and evaluates project-related budgets in accordance with the determined fee schedule.

  • Works closely with the post-award financial accountant regarding monthly monitoring of expenses and interim and final financial reporting.

  • Coordinates with SSW Business Office to perform tasks related to project budgeting and reporting, procurement, human resource transaction, and payroll processing.

  • Coordinates with SSW Pre-award office to support The Institute faculty and staff on all areas of proposal development and pre- award processing.

  • Coordinates with SSW IT and other departments and units to perform tasks related to ensuring personnel have necessary technology, supplies, and space.

  • Coordinates with SSW Human Resources and staff and faculty within The Institute to perform tasks related to hiring and orienting new staff and ensuring support for professional development.

  • Supports The Institute Director to facilitate communication within The Institute and liaise with external departments and units.

  • Acts as a facilitator in balancing the needs of The Institute, funders, SSW, and the University.

  • Reports to The Institute Director and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s in business or financial management, public or nonprofit administration, or related field.
Experience: Seven (7) years of related experience to position required.
