The City of Philadelphia is seeking a Director of Content to lead the content team that shapes Phila.gov, the city’s primary digital platform for delivering information and services to residents, businesses, and visitors. This on-site, full-time leadership role is ideal for a highly experienced, strategic thinker who excels in editorial management, content lifecycle planning, and the creation of inclusive, accessible digital experiences.

The Director of Content will play a pivotal role in defining the voice of the city online. You will be responsible for guiding a team of writers, editors, and strategists while collaborating with city departments to ensure content across the platform meets high standards of accuracy, clarity, and usability.

Key Responsibilities:
🔹 Lead, mentor, and manage a content team including editors, writers, and strategists
🔹 Oversee all phases of the content lifecycle: planning, creation, editing, approval, and retirement
🔹 Partner with city departments to maintain, review, and enhance web content
🔹 Develop and enforce content standards, workflows, and style guides
🔹 Ensure adherence to plain language standards and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility requirements
🔹 Leverage analytics, research, and user feedback to improve content performance
🔹 Collaborate with cross-functional teams: designers, developers, and product managers
🔹 Provide editorial oversight on major city initiatives and campaigns
🔹 Foster a team culture of collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in content strategy, digital content, or editorial leadership

  • 3+ years of experience managing or mentoring content professionals

  • Expertise in writing and editing for digital platforms with a focus on tone, clarity, and accuracy

  • Proven ability to manage complex content operations and editorial workflows

  • Familiarity with content management systems such as WordPress or Drupal and basic HTML

  • Background in civic tech, government, or nonprofit work is a plus

  • Strong commitment to inclusive communication, public service, and digital equity

Position Details:

  • Work Type: Full-Time, On-site

  • Salary Range: $110,000 – $120,000 annually

  • Residency Requirement: Must become a City of Philadelphia resident within 6 months of hire

  • Vaccination Policy: Vaccination no longer required unless in a medical or emergency-facing role
