Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the U.S. Department of Energy’s largest multi-program science and energy laboratory, invites applications for the position of Senior High Performance Computing (HPC) Engineer – Classified Environment. This critical role within the Field Intelligence Operations Division focuses on the design, implementation, and management of HPC systems within highly secure, classified environments.
The ideal candidate will be a technical leader with extensive hands-on experience in HPC architecture, cluster management, parallel computing, and system optimization. The position involves close collaboration with security teams, researchers, and IT leadership to ensure the HPC infrastructure adheres to the highest standards of performance, reliability, and data protection required for classified scientific research.

Key Responsibilities:
HPC System Design and Architecture: Lead the design, deployment, and documentation of HPC systems tailored for classified computing environments.
Cluster Management and Optimization: Oversee cluster configuration, job scheduling, and performance optimization to ensure efficient, secure, and reliable operations.
Security and Compliance: Enforce compliance with DOE and federal security standards (e.g., NIST, DISA STIGs). Conduct regular audits and implement risk mitigation strategies.
Performance Tuning and Troubleshooting: Continuously monitor system health and performance using diagnostic tools, resolving technical bottlenecks and system inefficiencies.
Collaboration and Leadership: Provide technical leadership for HPC-related projects, guiding teams from design through implementation. Mentor junior engineers and foster a collaborative, learning-focused environment.
Continuous Innovation: Stay abreast of emerging HPC technologies and propose strategic improvements to infrastructure, processes, and workflows.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline (advanced degrees or equivalent experience considered).
8+ years of relevant professional experience in HPC engineering, parallel computing, and cluster management.
Proven experience in classified or highly regulated computing environments, with knowledge of security frameworks and compliance protocols.
Expertise in HPC system architecture, including cluster management tools such as SLURM, PBS, or Moab.
Strong background in Linux administration, scripting, and automation (Bash, Python, Ansible).
Experience with performance tuning and benchmarking tools (Ganglia, Grafana, etc.).
Familiarity with parallel programming frameworks (MPI, OpenMP, CUDA) and high-speed interconnects like InfiniBand.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with advanced storage solutions and parallel file systems such as Lustre, GPFS, or BeeGFS.
Relevant professional certifications (Certified HPC Professional, Linux+, Security+).
Excellent leadership, communication, and project management abilities.
Strong problem-solving skills, proactive mindset, and capacity to work in a fast-paced, classified environment.
Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and staying current in the evolving HPC field.
Special Requirements:
U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance with SCI from the Department of Energy.
Must pass a pre-placement drug test and participate in an ongoing random drug testing program (Workplace Substance Abuse Program - WSAP).
May be subject to polygraph testing due to the sensitive nature of classified work.
