Ed Psych Assessment Specialist

Carilion Clinic is seeking an ED Psych Assessment Specialist to provide mental health services to patients from adolescence through advanced adulthood in an emergency department setting. This role involves initial assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group therapy, and psychosocial evaluations. The specialist will work closely with healthcare team members, community resources, and regulatory agencies to facilitate patient transitions from the ED to appropriate care settings, serving as a patient advocate.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide assessment, consultation, and referral services to self-referred patients or those referred by physicians, counselors, and other agencies.

• Coordinate treatment and referral recommendations with psychiatrists and physicians for patients with concurrent medical issues.

• Document all intake information accurately in electronic medical records.

• Establish and maintain professional communication with internal and external providers and caregivers.

• Serve as a liaison between Emergency Psychiatry Triage services, physicians, nursing staff, community services, and families.

• Follow up on referral inquiries and maintain knowledge of civil commitment processes, coordinating involuntary admissions with local Crisis Services Boards.

• Utilize technological systems including bed board, Tele-tracking, web x-change, Epic, and Outlook to facilitate patient throughput.

• Work weekends (Fri/Sat/Sun) from 7 PM to 7 AM.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in social work, counseling, or related field.

• 1–3 years of related experience in mental health or emergency services.

• Must be able to obtain AHA BLS-HCP certification.

• Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.

• Crisis intervention skills, cultural competence, integrity, and courteous disposition.

• Completion of orientation and competency validation successfully.

• De-escalation training must be completed within four months of hire and maintained.

• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
