Description:

The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind Wikipedia and other free knowledge projects, is hiring an Engineering Manager for Security and Privacy. This is a remote full-time opportunity ideal for experienced engineering leaders passionate about open-source software, security, and global impact.

In this leadership role, you’ll manage a team of security and privacy engineers within the Product Safety and Security team, contributing directly to protecting the integrity of the Wikipedia platform and safeguarding the global community that powers it. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally to implement privacy-aware, secure infrastructure and advise on strategic security decisions across the Foundation.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a team of security and privacy engineers protecting Wikimedia projects, users, infrastructure, and assets.

• Partner with product management, engineering, legal, and IT to develop and implement the security and privacy roadmap.

• Shape and oversee engineering processes including sprint planning, security reviews, release deployments, and incident response.

• Establish and drive performance against organizational and technical security goals.

• Advise product teams on secure software design and privacy-enhancing technologies.

• Contribute to inclusive hiring, onboarding, and development of a high-performance remote team.

Required Skills & Experience:

• Demonstrated experience managing software engineering or infrastructure teams.

• Strong understanding of systems engineering, security architecture, cloud platforms (e.g., Kubernetes, OpenStack).

• Ability to facilitate technical collaboration in distributed, asynchronous environments.

• Excellent communication skills, with a record of building consensus across technical and non-technical teams.

• Willingness and ability to travel internationally 2–3 times per year.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Background in security engineering or managing security-focused teams.

• Contributions to open-source projects or familiarity with Wikimedia platforms.

• Passion for inclusive, decentralized systems and community-driven development.

• Familiarity with privacy frameworks and governance (GDPR, CCPA, etc.).

Work Authorization:

Open to applicants in multiple countries including the US, UK, India, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, and others. Non-US hires will be employed via a local Employer of Record (EOR).

Salary & Benefits:

• Annual salary (US-based): $132439 to $208378 (equivalent to $11036/month to $17365/month)

• Salaries adjusted for cost of living in other countries.
