Description:
Fairfield University is seeking a highly experienced Environmental Health and Safety Supervisor to join its Facilities Management Division. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and managing comprehensive environmental health and safety (EHS) programs that protect the students, faculty, staff, and visitors across the University. This full-time, on-site role will ensure regulatory compliance, foster a safety-first culture, and act as the institution’s primary resource for all health and safety-related concerns.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and oversee full-scale EHS programs, including laboratory safety, hazardous waste management, chemical hygiene, bloodborne pathogens, air quality, and biological waste programs.
Act as Chemical Hygiene Officer, maintaining the chemical hygiene plan and biomedical waste management policies.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DEEP, and state hazardous waste laws.
Support labs in safety planning, risk assessments, and creating SOPs for hazardous operations.
Conduct laboratory inspections, workplace assessments, and incident investigations.
Oversee 24/7 emergency response related to chemical, biological, and radiological spills or events.
Coordinate safety compliance documentation including MSDS, RCRA manifests, accident reports, and university-wide safety policies.
Collaborate with science departments on chemical storage and RCRA 90-day storage management.
Train faculty, staff, students, vendors, and construction personnel on safety and compliance procedures.
Serve as liaison with legal counsel and governmental regulatory bodies for inspections and reporting.
Oversee selection and vetting of EHS vendors and contractors in coordination with Purchasing.
Participate in the University Safety Committee and IACUC protocol management.
Assist in grant writing and regulatory documentation.
Keep up to date with regulatory changes and industry best practices through training, seminars, and literature review.
Educational Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health, Safety Engineering, or related field required.
Master’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience.
Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
Current OSHA 10 certification required; OSHA 30 certification preferred.
State of Connecticut certifications such as HAZMAT Technician and Operational Awareness are required.
RCRA certification required.
Skills & Qualifications:
Strong physical condition and mobility; able to work in hazardous environments with proper PPE.
Valid motor vehicle license.
Advanced knowledge of industrial hygiene and safety standards.
Proficiency in safety software, documentation systems, and regulatory reporting.
Ability to interact effectively across departments and act as a subject matter expert.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Emergency response experience preferred.
Additional Information:
This position involves routine exposure to hazardous materials and environments. PPE must be worn as required.
