A Series A defense technology startup, is seeking a Head of Applied Research. This pivotal leadership role involves spearheading efforts to deploy cutting-edge, domain-specific AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), directly to the tactical edge for critical national security applications.

The Role

You will manage and guide a team of four research engineers. You will own the research roadmap, leading the prototyping and development of AI models tailored to specific customer needs. A primary focus will be the training, fine-tuning, and optimization of LLMs for efficient on-device deployment and enabling agentic workflows. You'll conduct novel research, design experiments, develop models/algorithms, write efficient machine learning code, and work closely with product and engineering teams to connect research outcomes with deployed solutions.

The Essential Requirements

• Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Proven background in research, including experience working in a lab or research environment.
• Hands-on experience with deep learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Large Language Models (LLMs).
• Direct experience using AI frameworks and tools such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Jax.
• Broad knowledge of the AI field with specific interest in fine-tuning and applying language models.
• Must be excited to support critical national security missions and be eligible to obtain any required US clearances.
