Shedd Aquarium, one of the world’s leading institutions in aquatic research, education, and conservation, is seeking a dedicated and highly experienced Manager of Cetaceans to join its Animal Care and Science Division. This critical leadership role is responsible for overseeing the care, welfare, and training of Beluga Whales and Pacific White-sided Dolphins, ensuring the highest standards of husbandry, animal welfare, and training practices.
The Manager of Cetaceans will work closely with the Director of Animal Behavior and Training as part of the Oceanarium Leadership Team to guarantee compliance with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and Shedd’s mission-driven values. This role demands a strong leader who can balance daily operations, staff development, and cross-departmental collaboration with a commitment to animal welfare, public engagement, and conservation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and supervise the Cetacean Team, including staff selection, training, development, and performance management.
Develop and implement advanced training protocols for animal husbandry, proactive medical care, and public presentations.
Oversee daily care, welfare, training sessions, and enrichment activities for whales and dolphins.
Collaborate with Animal Health, Environmental Quality, Facilities, and Dive Operations to maintain optimal animal habitats and health.
Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards related to animal care and safety.
Represent Shedd Aquarium publicly, including media engagements and presentations, as a spokesperson on cetacean care and welfare.
Manage budgets, operational planning, and resource allocation within the Cetacean Team.
Support research, conservation, breeding, and sustainability programs nationally and internationally.
Develop staff training programs in animal care, operant conditioning, public engagement, and communication.
Contribute to Shedd’s cross-departmental goals, collaborating with teams in Conservation, Research, Guest Relations, Learning, Events, Marketing, and Development.
Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, SCUBA safety requirements, and other legal protocols.
Maintain readiness to step into active animal care roles as needed, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in marine sciences, biology, zoology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Experience:
6+ years in aquatic animal care (preferably with whales and dolphins).
1+ year in a leadership or management capacity.
Strong knowledge of husbandry, operant conditioning, and positive reinforcement training.
Experience with breeding programs, veterinary protocols, and collection planning.
Proficiency in record-keeping systems and animal management software such as TRACKs.
Skills:
Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication abilities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and operational management tools.
Ability to manage budgets and interdepartmental projects.
Certifications:
Valid driver’s license (within 6 months of hire).
Valid passport (within 6 months of hire).
Minimum Open Water SCUBA certification (must pass dive physical and checkout protocol).
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, swim, kneel, stoop, stand, and walk regularly.
Exposure to varying conditions: water, heat, cold, chemicals, and noise levels (low to loud).
