Historic Newton (HistoricNewton.org) seeks an enthusiastic, personable, and self-motivated Museum Assistant for visitor services and special projects at our museums. The Assistant staffs the front desk at Durant-Kenrick House & Grounds and/or the Jackson Homestead and Museum to greet, orient, and assist visitors and callers while maintaining a safe, welcoming museum environment and being on hand to address routine questions and unforeseen occurrences.

The Assistant will also perform project-based tasks which might include data entry, historical research, collections cataloging, assistance with education or public programs, small marketing tasks, or event staffing. (Projects will be determined based on the changing needs of the organization and the skills, strengths, and interests of the Assistant.)

Requirements include some college (minimum bachelor’s degree preferred); retail, reception, or guest services experience; the ability to work both independently and collaboratively; strong interpersonal, project management, and communication skills (written and verbal); a well-developed customer service ethic; a working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and databases; the ability to bend, climb, and carry heavy objects; and the ability to learn site-specific history for answering visitor questions.
