Duties

The Museum Specialist (Zoology) is responsible for a broad range of tasks associated with use, management, outreach, and physical care of collections in the museum. All work is performed in accordance with Smithsonian Institution (SI) policies and procedures and acceptable scientific methods in compliance with the NMNH Collections Management Policy and appropriate unit-defined procedures.

In this position, you will:

  • Perform collections management work in the scientific field of entomology using terminology used to describe and classify insects.
  • Perform collections activities that include, most importantly, the handling, preparation, and sorting of specimens.
  • Use existing informational resources, creates specimen records in museum collections information systems (Emu or other similar databasing systems).
  • Use museum guidelines, prepares correspondence and creates records for loans, acquisitions, and disposals of specimens.
  • Assist with the physical preparation, sorting, labeling, distribution, and storage of newly acquired and backlog specimen material.
