Operations Transformation Leader

 

Description:

APM Terminals, a global leader in port and terminal operations and a part of the A.P. Moller–Maersk Group, is seeking a highly skilled and visionary Terminal Transformation Lead for its Elizabeth, NJ terminal. This position plays a critical role in driving operational modernization, workforce transformation, and business process improvement aligned with the terminal’s strategic goals.

The Terminal Transformation Lead will spearhead the change management and modernization initiatives, ensuring seamless integration between current operations, labor relations, and upcoming automation or electrification projects. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership, collaboration, and Lean management expertise to implement and sustain a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic and operational transformation of terminal operations to align with modernized business models and remote/electric operations.

  • Act as a change management leader, promoting a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and improvement.

  • Collaborate closely with Labor Relations, HR, Lean, and Operations teams to ensure transformation efforts align with corporate goals and collective bargaining agreements.

  • Oversee OPEX and CAPEX transformation budgets, ensuring effective resource allocation and cost control.

  • Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including unions, regional teams, and the shipping association.

  • Design and implement standardized work processes and training programs for new technologies and operational methods.

  • Establish a digital learning platform for training and development in line with Lean systems and TWI standards.

  • Develop and execute a communication and stakeholder engagement strategy to ensure change readiness and employee alignment.

  • Lead efforts to define KPIs, track progress, and maintain a balance between transformation and business continuity.

  • Oversee the design and implementation of an engaging onboarding program covering company values, purpose, and employee value proposition.

  • Maintain adherence to ISO9001/2000 and equivalent compliance standards to support quality, safety, and operational efficiency.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Organizational Psychology, Labor Relations, or related field.
    Preferred: MBA in Strategic Leadership or Master’s in Organizational Psychology or Labor Relations.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum 5 years in Change Management and transformation leadership roles.

    • At least 8 years of experience managing transformation or modernization projects.

    • Background in terminal or port operations is a plus.

  • Strong skills in Lean methodologies, process improvement, and workforce optimization.

  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management capabilities.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Power BI.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive results under complex operational conditions.

  • Must demonstrate accountability, agility, collaboration, and a strong mindset for continuous improvement.


Work Environment & Travel:

  • Primarily based in an office setting within the terminal, with occasional on-site work in the terminal yard.

  • Must be comfortable working around industrial environments and outdoor conditions when required.

  • Occasional travel within the United States to other terminals may be required.


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Annual Salary: USD 135000 – 175000 (equivalent to USD 11250 – 14583 per month)
