Packaging Engineer

 

Description:

Reynolds American Inc., a member of the British American Tobacco Group, is seeking a Packaging Engineer to join their dynamic team in Winston-Salem, NC, in a hybrid work setting. This full-time role will support the Scientific Research & Development function by leading and executing packaging solutions that meet commercial, sustainability, and operational objectives.

The Packaging Engineer will report to the Director of Packaging Development and work cross-functionally with various internal teams such as Operations, NPI, Marketing, Quality, Global Packaging, and external partners like suppliers and creative agencies. This position requires occasional travel (10–20%).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across departments and external vendors to commercialize new materials and packaging solutions.

  • Provide technical support for cost reduction efforts, process improvements, and material issue resolutions.

  • Plan and execute material trials and support machinery qualifications for production.

  • Define and maintain packaging specifications and structural drawings.

  • Deliver packaging designs that meet functional and aesthetic requirements.

  • Offer expert guidance on packaging structures, material choices, and design feasibility.

  • Troubleshoot packaging-related issues alongside Manufacturing and Quality teams.

  • Ensure projects are completed within timelines and well-documented.

Essential Experience, Skills, and Knowledge:

  • Degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong grasp of packaging materials (paper, paperboard, plastic, films).

  • Leadership and problem-solving abilities with scientific approach to solutions.

  • Understanding of sustainability practices, materials, and production processes.

  • Proficiency in technical communication, documentation, and CAD for structural design.

  • Self-driven with excellent communication, project management, and interpersonal skills.

Beneficial Skills:

  • Experience using Adobe Illustrator, ArtiosCAD, or SolidWorks.

  • Knowledge of printing and various manufacturing processes.
