Patient Safety Companion

 

Description:

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking compassionate and attentive Patient Safety Companions to provide direct observation and support for patients requiring close monitoring due to medical or behavioral reasons. This role plays a critical part in ensuring patient safety, preventing self-harm, and promoting a secure, comfortable environment during care.

As a Patient Safety Companion, you will serve as a constant presence at the patient’s bedside, working closely with nursing staff and healthcare teams to address patients' immediate needs and ensure their well-being.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide continuous observation to ensure patient safety.

  • Obtain reports from nurses regarding patient care needs, diagnosis, and any special considerations (NPO, bed alarms, etc.).

  • Verbally redirect patients from engaging in harmful behaviors and summon nursing assistance when needed.

  • Monitor for self-harm risks, prevent falls, elopement, or dislodging of medical apparatus (IV lines, O2 apparatus, catheters, drains).

  • Request immediate assistance for any change in patient condition or disruptive behaviors.

  • Initiate CPR if required and follow infection control practices (standard and isolation precautions).

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment within patient rooms and work areas.

  • Engage patients in appropriate diversional activities such as coloring or games.

  • Demonstrate respect, teamwork, and customer service excellence.

  • Maintain confidentiality (HIPAA) and provide hand-off communication during shift changes.

  • Participate in training, education, and service recovery when required.


Skills and Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.

  • Certifications: Current CPR certification required.

  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics preferred.

  • Strong verbal communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to function independently and respond effectively in stressful situations.

  • Proficient in basic reading, writing, and computer skills.

  • Demonstrated maturity, tact, judgment, and sensitivity toward patients and families.


Compensation & Benefits:

  • Hourly Pay Range: $17 – $22.47/hr.
