Description:

Under general supervision of the Chief of Police or his/her designee, perform law enforcement work concerned with protecting the lives and property of the public, maintaining law and order, detecting and apprehending suspects in criminal cases, crime prevention, community relations, and educational programs/activities.
 

 

Job Duties
 

  • Perform varied and diversified duties involving the patrol of assigned area, buildings, streets and grounds, with responsibility for enforcing and carrying out motor vehicle and criminal laws, policies, rules and regulations of the Public Safety organization, the University System of New Hampshire, federal, state and local laws and ordinances.
  • Conduct investigations of accidents and assigned cases.
  • Exercise considerable judgment and resourcefulness in the investigation and arrest of criminals, and particularly in maintaining law and order during time of emergencies.
  • Make frequent contact with the public in warning or arresting persons guilty of violating the law or safe driving practices, and in rendering first aid, restoring traffic to normal flow and providing information.
  • Perform travel/patrol duties requiring considerable physical effort, which may demand continuous standing, walking, and occasional strenuous positions, under varying climatic conditions, with exposure to accidents or occupational hazards that may result in total disability of loss of life.
  • Assist other law enforcement officers in serving warrants, apprehending criminals, controlling mob violence and other general law enforcement work.
  • Patrol streets and grounds within assigned areas either on foot or in a vehicle equipped with a two way radio in order to prevent accidents and warn and/or arrest drivers for exceeding the speed limit, reckless or drunken driving, and driving without a proper license or equipment.
  • Direct activities in accident and disaster areas, rendering first aid and restoring traffic to normal; and investigate accidents, as required, to determine cause, and make arrests when laws have been violated.
  • Guard college/university property.
  • May appear in court as prosecutor or witness to present testimony in traffic violations and criminal cases.
  • Make investigations of all complaints of criminal acts reported by public or assigned by a superior.
  • Keep records and make required reports regarding activities.
  • Operate automobile, firearms, radio transmitters and receivers, radar equipment, computer terminal, typewriter, and associated job related equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned., Computer Back-up System Manager.
     

Minimum Qualifications
 

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement, safety, traffic and security policies, practices, technology and methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizational rules and regulations; practices and standards, state motor vehicle laws, criminal law, arrest procedures, evidence preservation, investigative techniques, court room demeanor and protocol.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid techniques.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use and care of weapons, radio transmitters, radar equipment, intoximeter, typewriters, computer terminals, recording equipment and police vehicles.
  • Demonstrated ability to react responsively in emergency situations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must qualify annually with department’s weapons in accordance with department policy and, the administrative rules of the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council.
  • Must successfully complete upon appointment and annually thereafter, a physical examination and fitness test as prescribed by of the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council.
  • No criminal record other than minor motor vehicle violations.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be certified as a full time police officer by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council within one (1) year of appointment through successful completion of the New Hampshire Police Academy or through approval of equivalency by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council.
  • Must successfully complete a written examination, interview(s), background investigation, psychological/polygraph examinations, medical exam, physical agility test and, be deputized by the municipal authority having jurisdiction.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy work (as determined in # 9) with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment, as necessary.
