Principal Systems Engineer

Description:

Arm is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer specializing in network interconnects for blade and rack-level systems. This position plays a key role in the design, simulation, and optimization of high-performance interconnect architectures that link compute, storage, and accelerator elements across datacenter and cloud-scale infrastructure. The role demands a strong technical foundation in networking standards and a passion for innovation in system architecture at scale.

This is a high-impact hybrid role based in Austin, TX, where you will work closely with cross-functional engineering and vendor teams to deliver next-generation rack-scale network solutions that power cutting-edge compute workloads, including AI/ML systems.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture and Design

  • Define and architect rack-level network topologies (e.g., 200/400/800G Ethernet, Smart NICs, network security solutions) optimized for performance, scalability, and cost.

  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to align interconnect solutions with power, performance, and efficiency targets.

  • Evaluate and select optimal network fabrics (Ethernet, InfiniBand, CXL, PCIe) based on system requirements.

  • Specify and design scale-up and scale-out network architectures for large-scale systems.

Performance and Simulation

  • Model and simulate network performance for rack-level systems, performing detailed bottleneck and latency analyses.

  • Develop optimization strategies to enhance bandwidth, reliability, and throughput across interconnected systems.

Integration and Validation

  • Collaborate with platform and board design teams to ensure robust physical and logical network integration.

  • Define comprehensive test plans for networking subsystem validation and bring-up.

  • Work closely with industry network vendors to ensure alignment with AI/ML system requirements and emerging features.

Standards and Compliance

  • Stay current with evolving networking standards and form factors (IEEE 802.3, OCP NIC, OSFP, QSFP-DD).

  • Contribute to the creation of internal compliance and design guidelines for networking hardware.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with firmware, software, and datacenter infrastructure teams to ensure end-to-end functionality across system layers.

  • Collaborate with ODMs, ISVs, and technology partners for product roadmap alignment and issue resolution.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in systems or network engineering within datacenter, cloud, or HPC environments.

  • Strong knowledge of rack-level networking topologies and high-speed interconnects.

  • Expertise in Ethernet and/or InfiniBand technologies, including experience with QSFP/OSFP modules and switching.

  • Understanding of Layer 1–3 protocols and performance optimization.

  • Proficiency with simulation and performance analysis tools.

Preferred:

  • Experience with CXL, NVLink, or PCIe-based interconnects.

  • Familiarity with Open Compute Project (OCP) hardware and standards.

  • Exposure to thermal and power modeling of networking components.

  • Scripting proficiency (Python, Bash) for automation and data analysis.

Why Join Arm

  • Work on innovative rack-scale systems powering next-generation computing workloads.

  • Collaborate with global experts in hardware, networking, and system design.

  • Competitive compensation and world-class benefits.

  • Opportunities for career advancement, professional learning, and innovation.

Compensation

  • Base Salary: $297,600 – $402,600 per year (depending on experience and location).

  • Additional Benefits: Comprehensive health coverage, equity programs, paid leave, and performance bonuses.

  • The full total rewards package will be shared during the recruitment process.
