Description:

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII and the largest industrial employer in Virginia with over 25,000 employees, is seeking a Radiation Safety Analyst 1 to join their team in Newport News, VA. As the sole designer, builder, and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines, Newport News Shipbuilding offers an opportunity to work at the forefront of technology, manufacturing, and integration of advanced naval ships.

In this role, the selected candidate will evaluate, implement, and oversee the company’s radioactive waste management programs and procedures to ensure protection against radiation hazards. Responsibilities include recommending and developing policies for inspection standards, decontamination and emergency procedures, waste handling, and disposal. The role also involves controlling personnel radiation exposures, environmental releases, and contamination levels while ensuring compliance with federal, state, local, and industry regulations.

Key duties will include:

  • Managing radioactive waste, including characterization of materials and equipment used in radiological work.

  • Inspecting radioactive waste and preparing disposal documents.

  • Reviewing documentation to ensure adherence to RCRA, TSCA, and other relevant regulations.

  • Developing and providing training to project engineers and trades personnel on radioactive waste management.

  • Staying updated with all applicable regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree (no prior experience required) or equivalent qualifications through military, trade, or shipbuilding experience as outlined.

  • Preferred: Degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or Chemistry.
