Description:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Animal Research Assistant or Specialist to join the Department of Medicine – Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. This role offers a valuable opportunity to engage in cutting-edge biomedical research while supporting critical animal studies that advance medical discoveries in cardiovascular science.

The position will be filled at either the Assistant or Specialist level, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will play a vital role in the design, execution, and documentation of laboratory research projects, ensuring adherence to rigorous scientific and ethical standards. Candidates should have extensive experience in animal handling and a strong understanding of molecular and cellular biology. Familiarity with surgical procedures and small animal imaging techniques is a plus.


Key Responsibilities:

For Laboratory Animal Research Assistant:

  • Perform daily laboratory maintenance and care of research animals, ensuring proper husbandry and health monitoring.

  • Collect biological samples, perform diagnostic testing (ELISA, bacteriological, molecular assays), and maintain detailed research records.

  • Assist with animal breeding, enrichment activities, and routine laboratory procedures such as DNA extraction, electrophoresis, and chromatography.

  • Conduct advanced animal-related procedures, including sample collection, minor surgeries, post-operative care, anesthesia administration, and euthanasia.

  • Compile and analyze research data using specialized software.

  • Support literature reviews, manuscript preparation, and figure development for publications.

  • Provide guidance and training to students and new staff when required.

For Laboratory Animal Research Specialist:

  • Perform advanced laboratory animal research functions, including surgical procedures, device implantation, and multi-species research activities.

  • Design, execute, and analyze research studies in collaboration with the Principal Investigator.

  • Develop and refine laboratory protocols, policies, and experimental methods.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in animal handling, ensuring compliance with all ethical and regulatory standards.

  • Prepare manuscripts, reports, and presentations based on research outcomes.

  • Train, mentor, and guide junior staff, students, and laboratory technicians.


Minimum Qualifications:

For Laboratory Animal Research Assistant:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field.

  • No prior experience required (rodent handling experience preferred).

  • Certification: Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) preferred.

For Laboratory Animal Research Specialist:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related field.

  • 3 years of experience in laboratory animal research or animal hospital settings, including 2 years in specialized rodent/multi-species work.

  • Certification: Registered Laboratory Animal Technologist (RLATg), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), or CVT preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong proficiency in animal handling, DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, protein purification, and tissue harvesting.

  • Familiarity with immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, and basic cell culture techniques.

  • Comprehensive understanding of relevant laws and standards (USDA, PHS, OLAW, IACUC, AAALAC).

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent research projects with precision and accountability.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
