Description:
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), the state’s only public academic health center and Portland’s largest employer, is seeking a PAS Revenue Cycle Specialist to join its Emergency Department team. This critical role involves greeting and registering patients, obtaining demographic and financial information, verifying insurance, supporting billing processes, and delivering excellent customer service to patients, families, and visitors.
This position plays a vital role in ensuring smooth patient flow, financial clearance, and compliance with state and federal regulations, while maintaining high standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
Patient Registration
Perform patient searches, identify and register patients upon arrival.
Collect and verify demographic, accident, and financial information.
Complete required legal and regulatory forms (REALD, privacy notices, Medicare documents, etc.).
Educate patients on financial assistance, insurance coordination, and rights.
Collect co-pays and deposits, issue receipts, and reconcile funds.
Manage patient valuables process and handle emergency situations appropriately.
Insurance Verification / Financial Clearance
Verify insurance coverage and financial status for all patients.
Create and maintain insurance records and guarantors.
Obtain benefit information (deductibles, co-pays, billing addresses).
Refer non-sponsored patients to Oregon Health Plan (OHP) and financial assistance programs.
Notify payors for admissions and direct transfers as required.
Manage trauma and accident-related billing processes (workers’ compensation, personal injury, motor vehicle accidents).
Customer Service
Provide exceptional customer service to patients, visitors, and staff in person, over the phone, and via electronic communication.
Communicate effectively and professionally in high-stress environments.
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent.
1 year of experience in a medical office setting (scheduling, registration, billing) OR 2 years of high-volume public contact experience.
Basic computer and keyboarding skills (minimum 40 WPM).
Knowledge of insurance processes and benefits verification.
Strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to walk and stand for 6–10 hours/day.
Preferred:
Prior hospital admissions or Emergency Department registration experience.
Six months experience as a registrar at OHSU with a 97%+ accuracy rate.
Knowledge of third-party liability and workers’ compensation insurance.
Proven multitasking, prioritization, and independent work abilities in high-volume settings.
Hours: Part-time; variable schedule including weekends and holidays.
Work Environment: Emergency Department setting with potential exposure to human tissue and bodily fluids.
Physical Demands: Extensive standing, walking, and use of portable computer carts; headset for call answering.
Hourly pay range: $25.86 – $34.95 (approx. $4,483 – $6,064 per month).
