Description:
San Mateo Medical Center, a division of San Mateo County Health, is actively recruiting for four Extra-Help Dentists to provide high-quality dental care across its hospital-based and community clinic settings. This role offers an excellent opportunity to serve diverse patient populations, including children, adults, homeless and transitional individuals, and patients with HIV diagnoses.
As an Extra-Help Dentist, you will be responsible for delivering full-scope dental services including examinations, diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative procedures, oral surgery, and preventive dentistry. You will integrate dental care with the broader healthcare system, benefiting from strong institutional support such as electronic health records, medical dictation, and access to dental and medical specialists.
San Mateo Medical Center operates five dental clinics in San Mateo (39th Avenue Clinic), Redwood City (Fair Oaks Health Center), Daly City (Daly City Clinic), Coastside (Half Moon Bay), and a Mobile Dental Clinic. Clinics operate Monday through Friday (8 AM – 5 PM), with some evening and Saturday hours.
This is an extra-help, at-will assignment with variable weekly hours, limited to a maximum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year. While some positions may qualify for Affordable Care Act benefits, extra-help assignments do not provide guaranteed permanent employment.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct dental examinations and diagnose oral health conditions.
Perform all phases of dental treatment including fillings, root canals, crowns, removable appliances, extractions, and emergency care.
Provide preventive dentistry services, oral hygiene education, and patient counseling.
Treat diseases of the mouth, prescribe medications, and perform oral surgeries.
Utilize and operate dental radiology equipment.
Maintain accurate patient records and ensure compliance with documentation standards.
Provide clinical supervision and instruction to dental students, residents, and professional staff.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure holistic patient care.
Prepare and maintain reports, review charts, and monitor treatment outcomes.
Participate in teaching, consulting conferences, and case reviews.
Qualifications:
Education & Training: Completion of a dental internship program.
Experience: Minimum 3 years of clinical experience, preferably in a community-based clinic setting, with strong exposure to comprehensive dental care.
Knowledge of:
Principles, practices, techniques, and equipment of modern dentistry.
Clinical supervisory practices.
Pharmacology, drug dosages, informed consent, and contraindications.
Documentation and reporting standards.
Skills & Abilities:
Diagnose and treat complex dental conditions.
Develop and execute treatment plans.
Perform routine and surgical extractions, crowns, root canals, prophylaxis, and emergency treatments.
Provide care to diverse populations including children, unscheduled patients, HIV-positive individuals, pregnant women, and homeless populations.
Establish effective relationships with patients and colleagues.
Licensure/Certification:
Valid license to practice dentistry issued by the California Board of Dental Examiners.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification approved by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Additional Information (Extra Help Assignment):
Extra-help employees are paid hourly and are limited to 1,040 hours per fiscal year.
Hours may vary weekly depending on department needs.
Some positions may be ACA benefits-eligible.
No guarantee of permanent status at the end of the assignment.
