Senior Certification Engineer

Industrial Scientific, a leader in gas detection solutions, is seeking a Senior Certification Engineer to join their Pittsburgh-based team in a hybrid role. As a Senior Certification Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the certification process for both new and existing products. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations while maintaining high-quality engineering output. This position demands strong expertise in hazardous location product certification, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage technical projects involving third-party certification agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

• Support new product development and ongoing projects by conducting feasibility studies and investigating applicable standards.

• Coordinate all aspects of the certification process across Industrial Scientific’s product lines.

• Act as a liaison between internal engineering teams and third-party certification bodies (UL, CSA, MSHA, DEKRA) to obtain global approvals for hazardous environments (e.g., Class 1 Div 1 and Zone 0).

• Maintain and update current certifications, ensuring all product modifications remain compliant.

• Participate in standards development activities relevant to Industrial Scientific products.

• Provide technical support for certification-related inquiries and internal requests.

• Prepare, maintain, and submit technical documentation required for certification approvals.

• Collaborate with global design teams to secure agency approvals such as ATEX, ANZEx, INMETRO, and others.

• Assist in quarterly certification audits and ensure adherence to company engineering processes.

• Travel domestically and internationally (less than 10%) to support certification completion.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred) or equivalent.

• 10+ years of experience in engineering with a focus on product certification.

• Expertise in hazardous environment safety standards, including:

  • IEC/EN/UL 60079-0, 60079-1, 60079-11

  • UL 913, CSA 157, CSA 152, IEC 60079-29-1, EN 45544, EN 50271

• Experience managing third-party offshore teams for new product development and lifecycle maintenance.

• Familiarity with PLM systems (Windchill), Oracle EBS, JIRA, and Agile/Stage-Gate processes.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of wireless and EMC standards such as EN 300 328, IEC/EN 61000, and others.

• Experience with battery-powered low-voltage designs, gas detection instrumentation, and wireless communication protocols (BLE, Wi-Fi, Cellular).

• Hands-on experience using soldering and mechanical tools.

• Competence with lab tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.
