Description:
Datavant, the world’s leading health data exchange platform, is seeking an experienced and visionary Senior Director of Engineering to lead the development of its AI-powered Provider Coding platform. This cutting-edge platform will integrate with electronic health records (EHRs), extract and analyze medical chart data, predict billing codes using machine learning, and provide efficient and auditable workflows for medical coders.
This is a strategic leadership role ideal for someone passionate about applying technology to solve complex problems in healthcare. The candidate will be responsible for defining technical direction, building a scalable and secure system, and fostering a high-performance team culture aligned with Datavant’s mission to power every healthcare decision with the right data at the right time.
Responsibilities:
Develop and lead the technical strategy for the next-gen Provider Coding platform
Build and scale a results-driven, agile engineering team
Architect integrations with EHRs using HL7, FHIR, and modern APIs
Collaborate with Data Science to embed AI/ML models into coding workflows
Ensure design meets HIPAA, SOC2, and other compliance requirements
Create intuitive, auditable coder workflows tailored to user and regulatory needs
Translate business and operational needs into scalable technical solutions
Drive product development while balancing rapid delivery and long-term resilience
Contribute to M&A activities, including due diligence and post-acquisition integration
Job Requirements:
10+ years of experience in software engineering, including 5+ in leadership
Expertise in cloud-hosted, secure software platforms
Strong knowledge of secure SDLC, API development (HL7/FHIR), HIPAA and SOC2 compliance
Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional and ML-integrated product teams
Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, and cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure)
Familiarity with task automation, workflow systems, and auditing tools
Exceptional communication and team development capabilities
Nice-to-Have Qualifications:
Experience in Revenue Cycle Management and medical billing codes (CPT, ICD)
Prior work in medical coder tooling or clinical operations
Knowledge of major EHRs (Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth)
Exposure to human-in-the-loop AI or reinforcement learning
Experience in high-growth or post-M&A environments
