Simulation Lab Technician

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU), located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, is a mission-driven institution founded in 1966 to address inequities in healthcare access and education. CDU offers the only historically Black Doctor of Medicine program west of the Mississippi and is deeply engaged in partnerships that expand equitable healthcare across Los Angeles.

The Simulation Lab Technician will play a vital role in supporting the Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Simulation Education, the incumbent will be responsible for overseeing, operating, and maintaining complex simulation equipment, software, and audiovisual systems used in the training of nursing students. The technician will ensure smooth operation of simulation sessions, provide technical and administrative support, train users, and manage lab resources.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Support

  • Set up simulation and skills labs with equipment and supplies for educational sessions.

  • Operate simulation software (Laerdal LLEAP, Gaumard UNI, CAE, Cerner, Learning Space) and simulation hardware (manikins, task trainers, AV systems).

  • Program and run simulation scenarios, prepare mannequins with moulage, fluids, wounds, and clinical props.

  • Perform equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrades, and repairs in collaboration with vendors and support staff.

  • Maintain inventories of supplies, order replacements, and ensure a clean and safe learning environment.

  • Train faculty, staff, and students on simulation equipment and technologies.

  • Document and update records of lab activities, maintenance, and supply usage.

Administrative Support

  • Provide administrative assistance to support smooth lab operations.

  • Order office, clinical, and simulation supplies.

  • Maintain accurate inventory and records of purchases and invoices.

  • Assist faculty with tours and orientations of simulation and skills labs.

  • Ensure compliance with university, state, and federal guidelines regarding biological and hazardous waste disposal.

  • Serve as a professional liaison between the lab, faculty, students, and external stakeholders.

Other Duties

  • Perform related tasks assigned by supervisors.

  • Stay current on simulation technologies by attending trainings, conferences, and workshops.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Associate’s degree in a technical field (computer science, healthcare, or related) or equivalent training.

  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) preferred.

  • Equivalent combinations of education and recent relevant experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years in electronics technology within the last 5 years.

  • At least 1 year experience in simulation-based healthcare education preferred.

  • College coursework in nursing, anatomy, physiology, or healthcare-related subjects highly valued.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong proficiency with PC/Mac software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).

  • AV systems expertise (digital/video cameras, projectors, multimedia systems).

  • Ability to program, run, and troubleshoot simulation manikins and related technology.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, physiology, pharmacology, and healthcare equipment (preferred).

  • Strong multitasking, prioritization, and time management skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and flexible hours (evenings/weekends as needed).
