Skilled Journeyman Carpenter

Eastern New Mexico University – Roswell Campus is seeking a skilled Carpenter/Maintenance Specialist to perform journeyman-level work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of wooden and wood-substitute structures. Reporting to the Carpenter Foreman, this role involves a wide range of tasks, from initial layout to final assembly, requiring the interpretation of blueprints, specifications, and work orders. Responsibilities include constructing and repairing cabinets, partitions, doors, windows, and ceilings; installing locks, hardware, and glass; staining and painting wood; performing minor roof repairs; setting up woodworking machinery; and using hand and power tools. The specialist will also assist in event setups, coordinate motor pool vehicles, perform vehicle checks, and handle emergency repairs during evenings, weekends, and holidays on a rotational basis.

The position demands the ability to estimate materials, record time and materials used, recommend ordering supplies, and work effectively with the campus community. Strong carpentry skills, tool operation knowledge, and effective communication abilities are essential. Physical requirements include regular lifting of up to 50 pounds (occasionally over 100 pounds), climbing, kneeling, crawling, and working in varying weather conditions and potentially hazardous environments.

Requirements:

• Minimum of 6 months related carpentry or maintenance experience

• Valid driver’s license

• Completion of the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course (employer-provided)

• Successful background check and pre-employment physical (employer-paid)

• Ability to interpret blueprints and technical diagrams

• Proficiency with carpentry tools and machinery

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Working Conditions:
The role involves both indoor and outdoor work, exposure to weather, mechanical parts, chemicals, and noise. Physical demands include frequent bending, climbing, lifting, and sustained standing or walking.
