Description:
Cook County Government seeks a Solid Waste Coordinator to lead and support solid waste planning efforts across suburban municipalities, advancing the County’s goals in waste disposal, recycling, and source reduction. This position serves as a key liaison between the County, the EPA, local waste agencies, and municipalities, ensuring compliance with environmental standards and implementing the County’s solid waste management plan.
The Coordinator also reviews legislation, provides strategic advisories, and manages programs aimed at improving long-term environmental and financial sustainability.
Coordinate and implement Cook County’s solid waste management plan across suburban municipalities.
Liaise with the EPA, local governments, and waste agencies to manage solid waste activities.
Review and advise on proposed legislation related to solid waste management.
Conduct and oversee environmental pollution inspections and sampling procedures.
Train and supervise inspection personnel.
Represent the department at public hearings and in hazardous materials-related matters.
Respond to disaster and hazardous material incidents as needed.
Minimum:
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
At least 3 years of experience in environmental sustainability, solid waste management, recycling, or composting (or equivalent education and experience).
Preferred:
Master’s Degree in urban planning or environmental engineering.
Five (5) years of experience in solid waste management (including recycling and composting).
Three (3) or more years of management/supervisory experience.
Strong knowledge of environmental and sustainability regulations.
Ability to manage programs and align them with department goals.
Skilled in sampling procedures and use of pollution control equipment.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report preparation.
Ability to train and supervise staff effectively.
Willingness to travel extensively within Cook County (must provide own transportation).
