Staff Software Engineer

Description:

Zoox is seeking highly skilled Senior/Staff Software Engineers to join their Simulation team in Seattle, WA. Simulation is critical to Zoox’s mission of developing fully autonomous vehicles, validating safety, and analyzing real-world performance. The team provides the simulation framework and tools necessary to rapidly develop and test hardware and software for Zoox’s autonomous vehicles.

Candidates will work on one or more specialized areas, including:

1. Sim C++ Framework: Architect and develop core simulator foundations, including communication frameworks, determinism, reproducibility, and performance optimization.

2. Simulation Traffic Modeling & Behavior: Develop intelligent participants for simulated roads, such as cars, pedestrians, and cyclists.

3. Scenario Automation: Build Python platforms for large-scale generation of autonomous driving scenarios.

4. Scenario Editor: Develop tools for creating effective simulation scenarios.

5. 3D Simulator (Sensor Simulation, Procedural Worlds, HiL): Develop realistic simulation for sensors (camera, lidar, radar), optimize procedural world generation, and improve simulator performance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop robust, scalable simulation frameworks and tools to support autonomous vehicle software and hardware development.

• Optimize simulation performance, ensuring determinism and reproducibility.

• Collaborate across teams to enable scenario creation, sensor simulation, and traffic behavior modeling.

• Contribute to architecture and maintainability of foundational simulation technology.

Qualifications & Skills:

• 8+ years of relevant experience in C++, Python, or related simulation/software development areas.

• Expertise in multi-threading, distributed real-time systems, and/or sensor simulation (bonus).

• Experience with graphics, rendering pipelines, asset pipelines, AI/ML, and CPU/GPU optimization is a plus.

• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a hybrid team environment.

Compensation & Benefits:

• Base salary: $200,000 – $321,000 per year.

• Additional components: Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights, Amazon RSUs, and potential sign-on bonus.
