Description:
Mercy Health, a faith-based and patient-focused healthcare organization, is seeking a Sterile Processing Manager for St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, OH. This leadership role is responsible for directing the Central Sterile department, ensuring consistent high-quality surgical instrumentation and equipment delivery, and maintaining compliance with all regulatory and safety standards. The manager will act as a professional role model, mentor, and technical resource for sterile processing staff and other healthcare team members.
The position includes oversight of in-house and/or offsite sterile processing, departmental budgeting, staff training, and quality improvement initiatives, ensuring compliance with AAMI, JCAHO, CDC, and state standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure departmental operations comply with regulatory agency standards (State Department of Health, JCAHO, DEQ, etc.) and exceed accrediting requirements
Manage functions and staff related to surgical purchasing and sterile processing
Provide orientation, ongoing training, and continuous quality improvement for all staff
Maintain customer service standards by meeting the expectations of internal and external customers
Develop and monitor departmental budget and demonstrate cost-conscious management of resources
Identify opportunities for change and process improvements related to cost, quality, and service
Communicate operationally pertinent information to staff
Education & Certification:
High School Diploma or GED (required)
Associates or Bachelors in Business, Nursing, or relevant field (preferred)
Required Certifications:
CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or HSPA
CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) or CBSPD
Preferred Certifications:
CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist, HSPA)
CER (Certified Endoscope Reprocessor, HSPA)
CHL (Certified Healthcare Leader, HSPA) required within 1 year of hire
Experience & Skills:
Minimum 3 years’ experience in sterile processing or related field (required), 5 years preferred
Strong leadership, decision-making, and financial management skills
Knowledge of anatomy, aseptic techniques, infection control, HIPAA, AAMI recommendations
Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and under pressure
Teamwork, communication across multiple levels, and stakeholder relationship management
Ability to conduct performance evaluations, precept staff, and manage sterile processing workflow
Professionalism, attention to detail, critical thinking, and ability to move with urgency
EPIC training preferred
