Surgical Services Technician

 

Description:

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), home to the renowned Casey Eye Institute, is seeking a Surgical Services Technician to join their surgical team. The Casey Eye Institute is recognized as a premier academic medical center, offering comprehensive eye care for both adults and children across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The successful candidate will play a vital role in assisting physicians and nurses in maintaining and operating a fully functional surgical procedure room, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety, comfort, and care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Surgical Preparation & Assistance:

    • Review surgical schedules, manuals, and physician preferences to prepare instruments, supplies, and equipment.

    • Verify sterility and functionality of surgical instruments.

    • Set up surgical rooms with proper sterile techniques and serve as a scrubbed member of the surgical team.

    • Assist surgeons by handing instruments, counting supplies with circulator, and ensuring patient comfort, safety, and privacy.

  • Post-Operative Assistance:

    • Process instruments for decontamination and sterilization via Central SPD.

    • Remove disposables and contaminated items following procedures.

    • Disinfect and reset the surgical procedure room, including all equipment, surfaces, and furniture.

  • Supply & Equipment Maintenance:

    • Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate with clinical engineering for repairs.

    • Manage supply inventories and communicate with CSPD for instrument repairs.

  • Additional Duties:

    • Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Certification & Training:

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at time of hire.

    • Graduation from a nationally-accredited surgical technology program approved by the Oregon Health Authority.

    • Must hold and maintain a national Surgical Technologist Certification by NBSTSA.

    • Alternatively, completion of a surgical technologist/assistant training program in the U.S. military or other recognized institutions with ongoing continuing education.

    • If not a graduate of an accredited program, must provide documentation of surgical technician practice for at least 2 of the 3 years preceding January 1, 2017, with continuing education requirements.

  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    • Effective problem-solving and critical thinking ability.

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure.

    • Highly organized with the capacity to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

    • Commitment to regular attendance and consistent performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior ophthalmology surgical experience.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel and Word).

Work Environment:

  • Constant exposure to hospital conditions, cleaning chemicals, and potential contact with human tissue, fluids, and radiation.

  • Frequent assignments under tight deadlines and changing priorities.

  • Use of hospital-approved protective equipment.
