Tax Manager

Description:

You don’t often hear this from firms in public accounting — but this one wants to know what you want from your career.

Where you want to work. What kind of clients you enjoy. Which areas of tax you’re curious about. How you like to learn. And how many hours you think is too many.

That’s the tone set from the top down at this Alabama-based firm. It’s a 100-year-old practice that feels nothing like the old school grind. In fact, since 2019 they’ve reinvented the way they work — splitting out tax and audit, investing in learning and leadership, and backing their team with the kind of tech setup most firms only talk about.

They’re now hiring two experienced Tax Managers. These are key roles. Not just to handle review, client relationships, and planning — but to help shape the future of the tax group as a new generation steps up.

This is the kind of firm where a CPA can actually grow into an equity Principal. But without selling your soul or being chained to 70-hour weeks.

They work hard during busy season (around 50–55 hours), but year to date their average is 45 hours (this includes busy season).

Outside of tax season it drops again — and everyone gets an additional 40 flex hours for summer.

You’ll join a firm that’s proud of its culture. Not just the words, but the real stuff: open door leadership, long tenure (some have been here 20+ years), and Partners who step in when the hours get intense to help lighten the load.

They’re looking for a go-getter. Someone who thrives in client service. You might be a generalist, or already dialed into a niche like real estate, construction, or healthcare.

Either way, you’ll bring the kind of experience where you’ve truly been in the weeds. Not just 200 billable hours a year and a review tickbox. But a real understanding of tax and the drive to keep getting better.

What’s on offer

  • Generous PTO — starts at 4.5 weeks and increases to over 6 weeks with time served
  • Summer flex time — 40 additional hours between Memorial Day and Labor Day
  • Profit share 401k contributions (averaging 5% in recent years)
  • CCH Axcess system and an innovation-forward mindset
  • Opportunity for equity track and long-term leadership
  • What they’re looking for
  • 7–10+ years’ experience in public accounting
  • CPA preferred
  • Solid client service background and a people-first leadership style

A willingness to be part of the firm’s next chapter — whether in-office, hybrid, or partially remote with some office time each quarter. Remote preference is for someone in an adjacent state to Alabama in case you are required to do any occasional in person meetings.
