The City of Baltimore is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Tow Truck, CDL Driver II within the Department of General Services. This role offers the opportunity to serve the city by operating and managing tow truck operations, ensuring safe transport of a variety of vehicles, and supporting public services.
This position involves driving and operating trucks and heavy-duty equipment of all sizes, including tow trucks for large commercial vehicles such as fire apparatus, trash trucks, vactors, jet rodders, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment. Some roles may involve leading a small crew, assigning and reviewing work, and ensuring safe and effective operations.
The role requires flexibility, as incumbents may work evenings, weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, or emergency callback duty. Work may be performed outdoors in diverse conditions including highways, landfills, construction sites, repair yards, and utility maintenance sites, with exposure to traffic, dust, fumes, noise, and inclement weather. Moderate to strenuous physical activity including bending, climbing, crawling, lifting, and moving heavy objects is required.
Key Responsibilities:
Safely operate tow trucks and other heavy-duty equipment for the transport of vehicles and machinery.
Perform towing of both standard and large commercial vehicles.
Oversee and provide direction to semi-skilled laborers or crew members, ensuring compliance with safety and operational procedures.
Perform equipment checks, basic mechanical troubleshooting, and ensure vehicles meet regulatory standards.
Respond to emergency situations requiring towing and recovery operations.
Work in varied environments including highways, construction zones, and repair sites under challenging conditions.
Ensure compliance with City of Baltimore regulations, safety standards, and departmental policies.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or GED required.
At least 3 years of experience in one of the following:
Laboring tasks with one year of lead responsibility.
Installation, maintenance, and repair of exterior lighting systems.
Electrical maintenance, installation, or repair work.
Operation of earth-moving, highway, logging, or utility maintenance equipment.
Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial Driver’s License (or equivalent from another state) with eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City permit.
Must upload a valid driver’s license with the application. Provisional licenses are not accepted.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years of professional towing experience.
1 year of mechanical repair experience.
CDL A License.
Experience towing large commercial vehicles such as fire apparatus, trash trucks, dump trucks, and heavy equipment.
Additional Information:
Employment is subject to background check and fingerprinting.
Mandatory six-month probationary period applies to all hires.
Eligible candidates will remain under consideration for at least six months.
Education obtained outside the US must be evaluated for equivalency.
Some positions may require obtaining a Pesticide Regulation License within six months of employment.
Compensation & Benefits:
Monthly salary: USD 4114 – 4714 (annual USD 49368 – 56575).
Starting pay: USD 49368 annually.
