CNA Insurance, a leading name in commercial property and casualty insurance, is seeking an experienced Underwriting Consultant (Construction, Umbrella & Excess Casualty) to join its team in Atlanta, Georgia. This position offers a unique opportunity to manage and grow a complex book of business while contributing to strategic underwriting decisions across the organization.

The successful candidate will serve as a technical expert in underwriting, handling high-value, complex accounts with significant exposure in the construction and excess casualty segments. This role demands strong analytical ability, business acumen, and relationship management skills to drive profitable outcomes and maintain CNA’s reputation for underwriting excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage, develop, and analyze a highly complex portfolio of underwriting risks with minimal oversight.

  • Perform in-depth diagnostic and systematic analysis to assess risk acceptability and structure specialized endorsement language.

  • Determine appropriate pricing for complex accounts through financial evaluation and competitive analysis, ensuring compliance with internal and regulatory guidelines.

  • Make informed recommendations on underwriting policies, pricing strategy, and product positioning.

  • Evaluate the quality, quantity, and profitability of underwritten business; prepare comprehensive reports for senior management.

  • Maintain and expand agency and broker relationships, particularly with major producers in the construction and casualty sectors.

  • Conduct field visits and represent CNA within the brokerage community to strengthen market presence.

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior underwriters, contributing to training and professional development initiatives.

  • Stay current on state and territorial insurance regulations, market dynamics, and industry trends, representing CNA in professional trade organizations as needed.

  • Lead or participate in special underwriting projects and internal presentations.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Advanced underwriting expertise in construction, umbrella, and excess casualty insurance.

  • Strong proficiency in risk analysis, pricing strategy, and policy development.

  • Exceptional negotiation, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all organizational levels.

  • Strategic and creative problem-solving abilities for complex underwriting challenges.

  • Advanced computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and underwriting systems.

  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).

  • Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, ARM, or AU are highly preferred.

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant underwriting experience in commercial or construction-related lines.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Annual salary range: $72,000 – $141,000 (based on experience, qualifications, and location).
