Robert Half is partnering with a fast-growing non-profit organization in Washington, DC to recruit a Vice President of Accounting. This is a key leadership role reporting directly to an open, collaborative, and mentorship-focused CFO. The ideal candidate will possess deep experience in financial reporting, Single Audit/Uniform Guidance compliance, and process optimization within a non-profit or complex funding environment.

The Vice President of Accounting will lead the accounting and finance team, oversee month-end and year-end closings, manage audits and regulatory compliance, and help drive system improvements and strategic financial initiatives. This position offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the organization’s financial operations and growth.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the corporate accounting team to ensure excellence in financial reporting and operations.

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger management, reconciliations, and financial reporting.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the finance department.

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial statements.

  • Oversee Single Audit/Uniform Guidance (A-133/CFR 200) compliance and related audit requirements.

  • Act as the primary liaison with external auditors for annual financial statement audits, ensuring readiness and accuracy.

  • Collaborate on Form 990 preparation and coordinate with other corporate departments for complete and accurate filings.

  • Ensure compliance and reporting accuracy for federal and state funding sources, corporate sponsorships, and special contracts.

Operational Excellence

  • Review and approve account reconciliations and adjusting journal entries as needed.

  • Partner with department heads and operational leaders to address financial needs and provide relevant reporting and analysis.

  • Support and enhance the organization’s accounting systems and processes, collaborating closely with the technology team to drive automation and efficiency.

Strategic Partnership

  • Serve as a key advisor to the CFO, assisting with strategic financial projects, budgeting, and organizational initiatives.

  • Contribute to long-term financial planning, process improvements, and risk management strategies.


Ideal Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline (Master’s or MBA preferred).

  • CPA certification strongly desired.

  • At least 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership of finance teams.

  • Prior public accounting experience or background in audit highly beneficial.

  • Strong command of U.S. GAAP and experience managing complex accounting operations.

  • Proficiency in Intacct, NetSuite, or comparable accounting systems.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively in a mission-driven environment.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual Salary: $165000–$185000 (approximately $13750–$15416 per month)
