Marathon Petroleum Corporation (MPC), a leading energy company and one of the largest refining, marketing, and transportation organizations in North America, is seeking a Designer/Drafter to join its Kenai Refinery team in Alaska. The Designer/Drafter will support engineering and project teams by creating, updating, and maintaining detailed technical drawings and design documentation essential for the refinery’s safe and efficient operation. The role involves the use of AutoCAD and other drafting software to develop Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), electrical schematics, piping isometrics, and other engineering design documents.
This position reports directly to the Area Engineering Manager and supports both capital and expense projects, ensuring compliance with Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements. The Designer/Drafter will work within the refinery’s established engineering standards and document control processes while contributing to the success of complex technical projects.
Develop, update, and maintain P&IDs, PFDs, piping isometric drawings, electrical, and instrumentation schematics.
Create construction drawings for capital and expense projects using AutoCAD or Smart Instrumentation (SI) software.
Maintain and manage engineering-controlled and non-controlled documentation, ensuring all drawings and records are accurate and current.
Collaborate with project leaders and technical experts to prepare drawings for new construction, repairs, or modifications.
Support the Document Control process by maintaining an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) for engineering and project records.
Incorporate as-built redlines into design documents and update drawings for Management of Change (MOC) compliance.
Conduct field visits to gather data, verify dimensions, take measurements, and ensure design accuracy.
Facilitate site SharePoint and SharePoint Online systems for file collaboration, upload/download access, and document sharing.
Provide technical design support for onsite and contract engineers, ensuring timely document revisions and proper electronic filing.
Adhere to safety protocols, wear appropriate PPE, and comply with refinery safety and environmental regulations.
Education: High school diploma or GED (required).
Experience: At least 2 years of relevant drafting and design experience in a refinery, petrochemical, or related industrial setting.
Proficiency in AutoCAD.
Strong communication, time management, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and SharePoint.
Must be able to interpret color-coded markings on documents and perform physical field tasks as required.
Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a TWIC card.
Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without future visa sponsorship.
Travel requirement: up to 5% or less.
Ability to work either a 9/80 or 5/40 schedule, with occasional after-hours and Turnaround (TAR) support every three years.
Associate Degree in Drafting or a related technical discipline.
Experience with Electronic Document Management Systems (EDMS).
Experience in refining or petrochemical environments.
Electrical and instrumentation drafting/design experience.
Familiarity with MicroStation software.
Knowledge of industry codes and standards (OSHA, ANSI, PIP, etc.).
Experience with loop diagrams, PLC/DCS systems, and piping isometric drafting.
