Description:

NBCUniversal’s WMAQ-TV, NBC 5 Chicago, is seeking a Freelance News Assignment Editor responsible for coordinating and managing a variety of news assignment desk operations. This hybrid role requires full-time on-site work at an NBCUniversal-designated location in Chicago. The Assignment Editor plays a critical role in ensuring timely, accurate news coverage while collaborating with reporters, producers, and other newsroom staff.

Key Responsibilities:

• Coordinate reporters, photographers, and crews for assigned news coverage.

• Set up live shots and plan stories in collaboration with producers and managers.

• Build and maintain relationships with external news contacts to gather accurate information.

• Work with reporters and producers to shape stories and coordinate cross-department efforts.

• Assist with daily and future story planning to support newsroom goals.

• Monitor scanners, wires, and online/print sources for breaking news.

• Field produce and conduct interviews when needed.

• Gather information and edit video for use in newscasts.

• Pitch story ideas and contribute content for digital platforms.

• Make calls to gather information and help book interviews.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.

• Minimum 2 years’ experience on a television news assignment desk.

• Strong organizational, research, and communication skills.

• Ability to work all shifts, including nights, overnights, and weekends.

• Strong computer skills and knowledge of media platforms.

• Knowledge of Chicago and surrounding areas preferred.

• Fluency in Spanish a plus.
