Pharmacy Intern

Description:

Allegheny Health Network is seeking a Pharmacy Intern for its inpatient unit at Wexford Hospital. Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the intern will perform a variety of technical and clinical duties related to the hospital-wide unit-dose drug distribution system and intravenous (IV) admixture program. This role is essential for supporting accurate and safe medication distribution, assisting pharmacists in daily operations, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness using clinical skills.

• Procure and distribute medications per physician or pharmacist requests and established protocols.

• Fill routine patient orders for unit-dose carts and prepackaged pharmaceuticals.

• Prepare, compound, and label IV admixtures, including antibiotics, cardiac drips, solutions, irrigations, parenteral nutrition, and chemotherapy.

• Maintain pharmacy inventory, inspect supplies, and restock medications as needed.

• Prepackage bulk medications into unit-dose packages and manage routine IV pharmaceutical orders.

• Contribute to department operations, including computer tasks, process cart fill lists, pick lists, and label generation.

• Maintain a clean and orderly work environment and participate in continuous performance improvement and regulatory compliance efforts.

• Uphold safety, quality, and confidentiality standards at all times.

• Assist in training new employees and students as needed.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

• Must be enrolled in a School of Pharmacy or be a foreign pharmacy graduate.
