Description:

Gerdau North America, a leader in the steel industry, is seeking motivated and skilled Roll Shop Assemblers to join its team in Petersburg, VA. This role plays a critical part in supporting the rolling mill operations by assembling, maintaining, and rebuilding mill stands, rolls, and related components used in steel production. The Roll Shop Assembler will contribute to the smooth and efficient production of steel products used in various industries, including automotive, construction, agriculture, machinery, equipment manufacturing, and appliances.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble, inspect, and maintain rolling mill components, including straightener rolls, guides, shear blades, and saw blades, ensuring compliance with specifications.

  • Disassemble old mill stands, remove slag using tools such as scrapers, pry bars, cutting torches, or hammers, and install new rolls and guides.

  • Perform assembly, greasing, and alignment of mill stands using hand and pneumatic tools, as well as operate the offline setup verification system.

  • Conduct equipment changes related to mill stands, including lubrication systems, water sprays, chocks, and guides.

  • Monitor and replenish roll/guides inventory and consumable materials to ensure uninterrupted operations.

  • Assist in mill changeovers, cobble removal, and routine maintenance of vehicles and mobile equipment.

  • Utilize shop mathematics, blueprints, charts, and precision measuring instruments to ensure proper assembly and adjustments.

  • Operate overhead cranes for safe transfer of materials and equipment.


Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; alternatively, successful completion of an entrance exam.

  • 1–3 years of industrial or manufacturing experience.

  • Basic computer skills and ability to interpret charts, schedules, and touchscreens.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, general math knowledge, and ability to multitask effectively.

  • Capability to use adjustable controls, measuring instruments, gauges, and follow detailed instructions.

  • Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts (days, nights, and two consecutive weekends per month on a Dupont 4/3 schedule).

  • Eagerness to learn and grow within the company.
