The Human Rights Initiative (HRI) is seeking a Senior Director of Development to lead the foundation, corporate, and major gifts fundraising efforts. This role is crucial for securing philanthropic revenue to support HRI’s mission to provide comprehensive legal services to immigrant survivors of human rights abuses. As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Senior Director will manage a significant revenue portfolio and play an essential role in building and stewarding relationships critical to HRI’s long-term success.


Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Fundraising Leadership:

  • Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising roadmap.

  • Build and manage a portfolio of major donors ($5,000+) across foundations, corporations, and individuals using moves management strategies.

  • Utilize donor prospecting techniques and CRM systems to identify and engage new supporters.

  • Track fundraising performance and prepare regular reports for the Executive Director and Board.

  • Lead and manage a culture of accountability within the development team.

Foundation Relations (Goal: $550,000 annually):

  • Collaborate with the grants team to cultivate and steward foundation donors.

  • Support the preparation of high-quality grant submissions.

  • Expand HRI’s foundation pipeline through proactive prospecting.

Corporate Giving (Goal: $150,000 annually):

  • Develop and grow corporate partnerships, particularly with law firms providing or interested in ProBono support.

  • Build multi-year giving commitments and engage corporate partners through events and volunteer activities.

Major Individual Gifts (Goal: $350,000 annually):

  • Manage a portfolio of major donors with tailored cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.

  • Make a minimum of 10 asks within the first year.

  • Collaborate with Executive Director and Board leadership to leverage peer networks.

Campaigns and Event Support (Goal: $50,000–$100,000 annually):

  • Lead annual appeals, campaigns, and small donor cultivation events (e.g., CLEs, clinics).

  • Develop donor-centered messaging and materials with leadership.

Internal Collaboration & Stewardship:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director, grants & communications, finance/operations, and program teams to align fundraising efforts with organizational priorities.

  • Ensure timely and accurate entry of donor interactions and proposals into the CRM system.

  • Serve as the staff liaison to the Development Committee of the Board of Directors.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as needed to support development or organizational needs.


Qualifications:

Essential Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years of non-profit fundraising experience.

  • Proven success in foundation relations, corporate giving, and major gifts.

  • Strong ability to build relationships and manage donor portfolios.

  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.

  • High emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency with technology and CRM systems (or willingness to learn).

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Experience working with immigrants, refugees, or survivors of trauma.


Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $88,500 - $98,500, commensurate with experience.
