Senior Spectrum Scientist

MITRE is a not-for-profit corporation focused on solving the nation’s toughest challenges. Their work spans various fields including cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, and defense. MITRE is seeking a Senior Spectrum Scientist to contribute to the department’s work in wireless communications, signal processing, and position, navigation, and timing (PNT). The successful candidate will play a key role in identifying, prototyping, and evaluating spectrum-sharing and spectrum-management concepts. The role involves technical leadership, collaboration with senior staff and government stakeholders, and the opportunity to shape the future of spectrum management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and contribute to several projects in spectrum sharing, compatibility, and management.

  • Perform technical reviews of products and provide guidance for improvements.

  • Engage with sponsors and government stakeholders to secure funding and expand MITRE’s capabilities.

  • Foster relationships with external organizations and universities.

  • Contribute to technical and non-technical briefings, memos, and formal reports.

  • Collaborate with diverse technical teams on various signal processing applications, including wireless communications, satellite navigation systems, and sensor technologies.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 7 years with a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 4 years of experience; or equivalent combination of related education and experience.

  • Strong technical skills in relevant domains such as wireless communications, signal processing, and spectrum management.

  • Ability to document results through technical briefings, memos, and reports.

  • Experience in peer-reviewed publications and MITRE sponsor engagement.

  • Active Secret clearance, with the ability to obtain Top Secret or higher clearance.

  • Experience in fields such as 4G/5G, RF propagation, machine learning, and statistical signal processing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in electrical engineering, physics, computer science, or mathematics with a focus on signal processing and communication theory.

  • Knowledge of AI/ML approaches applied to signal processing and spectrum management.

  • Familiarity with supervised/unsupervised learning, machine learning structures (e.g., neural networks, SVM), and signal processing algorithms.

  • Proficiency in Python, C/C++, and/or MATLAB.

  • Experience in software development, debugging, and support.

  • Active TS Clearance or ability to obtain it within one year of hire.

  • Expertise in radar systems, image/video processing, and detection/estimation techniques.
